Rivers Trip

Posted: 28th April 2023

Year 5 embarked on an exciting field trip to explore rivers this week. The focus was on measuring the speed of flow, depth, width, and meanders of the river’s journey. We started the trip in the classroom to make hypotheses and predictions before exploring two different stages in the river’s journey. At the river sites, the children measured the depth and width of the river to make comparisons. The speed of flow was measured by dropping a cork and timing its journey over a set distance. They also studied the meanders of the river, analysing the curves, river cliff height and river beach depth to understand how the water was flowing and how the river was changing over time.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience exploring and learning about rivers and their natural features, with a few soggy feet, hot chocolate and a duck raft race along the way!
