Budding Documentary Makers at the Imperial War Museum

Posted: 11th October 2024

Year 6 Become Budding Documentary Makers at the Imperial War Museum

Our Year 6 children recently embarked on an exciting educational trip to the Imperial War Museum, where they had the unique opportunity to step into the shoes of documentary makers. The visit was guided by Reena, a filmmaker from SMASH TV, who introduced the students to the world of digital storytelling through the use of smart-cameras.

Hands-On Filmmaking Experience

During their visit, each student was tasked with creating their own mini-documentary. They explored the museum’s vast galleries, selecting objects and stories they believed needed to be shared with the world. The use of smart-cameras gave the pupils the chance to engage in a modern, hands-on filmmaking process, making history come to life through their eyes.

Developing Key Historical Enquiry Skills

In addition to the technical skills of documentary making, the Year 6 pupils developed important historical enquiry abilities, including questioning, critical thinking, and evaluating primary sources. This experience encouraged them to think deeply about the impact of war and conflict on individuals, both in the past and today, broadening their understanding of history.

Pride in Our Young Filmmakers

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and professionalism shown by every one of our Year 6 children. They embraced the challenge with skill, capturing stories and artefacts with the perspective of true budding filmmakers. Their creativity and dedication made the day an enriching experience for all involved.
