Weston Green School Marks Remembrance Day with Art and Reflection

Posted: 7th November 2024

This year, Weston Green School has been marking Remembrance Day with a unique, artistic tribute, bringing our students together to reflect on the significance of this important day. Each year group took inspiration from different renowned artists, creating expressive poppy artwork that symbolised remembrance and showcased the individual creativity of our children.

Year 3

Y3 were inspired by the work of Georgia O’Keeffe. Using oil pastels, they carefully blended colours to capture the delicate textures of the petals, leaves, and centre of the poppy. This hands on approach allowed them to practice shading and blending techniques while connecting with the symbol of the poppy in a meaningful way.

Year 4

Y4 looked to thestyle of Vincent Van Gogh, painting poppies and adding layers with printing techniques to bring texture to their artwork. This tactile activity gave them a deeper appreciation of how different textures and techniques can evoke emotion and depth, much like the poppy’s historical resonance.

Year 5

Y5 also drew inspiration from Georgia O’Keeffe, creating paintings that emphasised depth and dimension. Through layering and blending red with white, and green with black, they added value to their poppies, a creative nod to O’Keeffe’s iconic floral style.

Year 6

Y6 took their creativity to a larger canvas, inspired by Anj Jamieson. They painted poppies directly onto the hall windows, layering and blending colours to build value. Each window poppy reflected the individuality of its creator, symbolising the diversity within our school community.

Our Remembrance Day activities at Weston Green School encouraged artistic expression and provided a meaningful way for students to honour those who have served. These activities also highlighted our commitment to fostering creativity, individuality, and respect among our pupils. Through this vibrant display, we not only remembered the sacrifices of others but celebrated the unique perspectives of each child in our Surrey independent school.
